CHQ Chairman Richard A. Viguerie and executive chairman of Breitbart News Steven K. Bannon got together on Halloween at the Fortieth annual meeting of the Pumpkin Papers Irregulars – an annual dinner celebrating the life and legacy of Whittaker Chambers – and Washington’s RINOs and Democrats were left quaking in their boots.
The icebreaker for the evening’s event was Mr. Viguerie’s Halloween costume – a Steve Bannon disguise, complete with a cork gun to blow away the Washington establishment.
In his remarks to the group Bannon identified two existential threats to the United States and constitutional liberty; political Islam in an axis stretching from central Asia through Persia to the Mediterranean, and – especially important before President Trump’s trip to Asia – Chinese mercantilism.
In his remarks Bannon emphasized the themes he injected into a flagging Trump campaign that rocketed Trump from being as much as 16 points behind Hillary Clinton in the early Fall to his 306 to 232 electoral vote demolition of Clinton on Tuesday, November 8, 2016.
Echoing remarks he made earlier this summer that the economic war with China is everything. And we have to be focused on that. If we continue to lose it, we’re five years away, ten years at the most, of hitting an inflection point from which we’ll never be able to recover, Bannon reminded the audience of the imortance of the President’s upcoming trip to Asia.
They’re not shy about saying what they’re doing. One of us is going to be a hegemon in 25 or 30 years and it’s gonna be them if we continue to go down this path was the takeaway from Bannon’s remarks.
Bannon’s remarks about political Islam were especially timely given the Muslim terrorist attack in New York, as he reminded the dinner attendees that political Islam remains a threat to constitutional liberty, with Iran being the central adversary.
However, it was in their off-stage conversation that Viguerie and Bannon got together to discuss their most important mutual project: taking over the Republican Party to make it the home of limited government constitutional conservatives.
Emphasizing his view of America First economic nationalism Bannon’s take was – to paraphrase – that the Republican establishment has forgotten who they work for, which has left establishment candidates across the country, but particularly those in the Senate, disconnected from the Republican base and vulnerable to challenge by economic nationalist candidates.
However, the scariest thing for liberals and RINOs was not Mr. Viguerie’s Halloween costume, it was the idea, propounded by Mr. Viguerie since Donald Trump sewed-up the Republican nomination, that a conservative – economic nationalist coalition was a realigning coalition that would not only win general elections, but displace the Republican establishment and make the Republican Party the political home of limited government constitutional conservatives.
As Mr. Viguerie and Steve Bannon left the dinner promising to talk more about how to solidify the conservative – economic nationalist coalition there were no treats only tricks looming for the Republican establishment.
